"Wonderful weekend stay in this cosy cottage. Perfect base for trip to North Devon. The fire is amazing for winter and the bed was really comfortable and warm. Also the scones, jam and cream set up for our arrival were delicious!"

MONKLEIGH COACHMANS COTTAGE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to COACHMANS, a delightful self-catering cottage nestled through an archway in a picturesque cobbled courtyard within the grounds of Monkleigh village's historic old rectory. With parts dating back over 400 years, this charming retreat holds a rich history, believed to be the original bakehouse for the main house. The authenticity of its past is preserved with the original bread oven still in place, standing gracefully to the side of the wood-burning stove.
Situated on the edge of Monkleigh village, Coachmans offers a tranquil escape within easy walking distance of the welcoming village inn, The Bell, renowned for its excellent food and friendly atmosphere. The cottage finds itself in a peaceful location, surrounded by extensive gardens spanning approximately 3 acres. A highlight is the large wildlife garden featuring a serene pond, creating an idyllic setting for relaxation and communion with nature.

These beautiful grounds are available for the exclusive enjoyment of those staying at the cottage, complete with garden furniture and a small charcoal barbecue for al fresco moments. It's important to note that the grounds are extensive and unfenced, requiring supervision for children to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Despite its compact size, Coachmans boasts a wood burner, adding a touch of warmth and creating a cosy, romantic hideaway for two. The cottage is part of the traditional cobbled courtyard setting of original buildings surrounding the main house, exuding a rustic charm that complements its stunning rural location. Off-road parking is conveniently available right in front of the cottage, allowing for easy access to this enchanting retreat.

LIVING AREAS:

Within the level open-plan social space, the wood-burning stove takes centre stage, serving as a captivating focal point that radiates ample cosy heat throughout the cottage, creating an inviting atmosphere regardless of the time of year you choose to visit. To enhance your comfort, additional wood is generously provided free of charge, conveniently located across the courtyard. This thoughtful provision ensures that the allure of a crackling fire and the warmth it brings are readily accessible, contributing to a delightful and snug ambience during your stay.

KITCHEN / DINING:

Step into the cosy combined lounge/kitchen/dining room, where the charm of exposed beams imparts a rustic feel, adding character to the space. The dining area features a table and chairs that comfortably seat two, with the option for a high chair available upon request. A convenient under-stair cupboard houses various essentials, including a vacuum cleaner, ironing board, and brooms, ensuring that your practical needs are well catered to.
The well-equipped kitchen area boasts a modern built-in electric cooker and hob, a microwave oven, and a thoughtfully curated selection of kitchen equipment. Whether you're preparing a quick snack or a gourmet meal, you'll find the tools you need to create culinary delights.

For added convenience, a freezer is provided within the cottage, and a washing machine, along with additional sink facilities, can be found in an adjacent building — the former dairy. This setup ensures that you have all the amenities required for a comfortable and seamless stay, where the fusion of rustic charm and modern functionality creates a welcoming home away from home.

BEDROOMS:

Discover comfort and tranquillity in the spacious bedroom of the cottage, thoughtfully designed to accommodate two adults. The room features an antique double bed and a charming dressing table, adding a touch of timeless elegance to the space. The natural wood floor and coverings enhance the period feel of the room, creating a warm and intimate ambience that invites relaxation.
For your convenience, a built-in wardrobe is provided, offering ample storage space to ensure an organised and clutter-free stay. The size of the room also allows for the addition of a travel cot, catering to the needs of guests travelling with a little one. This well-appointed bedroom not only promises a restful night's sleep but also envelops you in a delightful blend of historic charm and modern comfort.

BATHROOMS:

Adjacent to the bedroom, the cottage unveils a well-appointed bathroom offering a full-size bath complete with a convenient hand-held shower attachment. The wood-effect laminate floor not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also contributes to a cosy and warm atmosphere, creating a soothing environment for relaxation.
Adding a touch of luxury and practicality, a heated towel rail ensures your towels are warm and ready for use, while an electric shaver point caters to your grooming needs. The thoughtful design of the bathroom combines functionality with comfort, providing a delightful space to unwind and refresh during your stay.

OUTDOORS:

As our valued guests at Coachmans, you are granted complimentary access to approximately 3 acres of expansive gardens, fields, and grounds that surround the cottage. Take leisurely strolls and explore the enchanting beauty of the original walled garden and fields, immersing yourself in the serene ambience of the natural surroundings. The eye-catching pond adds a picturesque touch to the landscape, but please be aware that it is unfenced. As such, attentive supervision of younger ones is essential to ensure their safety as they enjoy the outdoor spaces.
For your convenience and comfort, wood for the wood burner is thoughtfully stored under the linhay and is provided free of charge. Feel free to indulge in the cosy warmth of the wood burner, creating a snug atmosphere within the cottage. Sue and Tom were wonderful hosts and helped us out with everything we required. The cottage is beautiful, quaint and cosy, with cream tea and flowers a bonus. Comfy bed up spiral staircase adjoining bathroom, with a real bath. Downstairs the wood burner, supplied with well dried wood was a joy. The cobbled courtyard where we parked added to the cottage’s ambience. If you want a Devon/Cornwall experience in countryside, come to Coachman’s Cottage.

We had the pleasure of staying at Monkleigh Coachman's Cottage, and it was truly a delightful experience. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warm hospitality and a welcoming cream tea. It was such a thoughtful touch that made us feel instantly at home. The cottage itself is charming, with a cosy and inviting atmosphere that immediately put us in relaxation mode. The one-bedroom setup was perfect for our needs, providing a comfortable and intimate space for our stay. One of the highlights of our visit was learning about the rich history of the property. It added a layer of depth to our stay, making us appreciate the cottage even more. The historical aspect of Monkleigh Coachman's Cottage is truly fascinating, and we're grateful for the hosts for sharing that with us. Overall, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for the lovely stay at Monkleigh Coachman's Cottage. It's a hidden gem that offers not only comfort but also a connection to the past. I just had the most incredible experience at this lovely place, and Sue, the host, was absolutely fantastic! She took such good care of us throughout our stay. The check-in process was a breeze with clear instructions, making it easy to find and get inside the property. And let me tell you, everything was spotlessly clean! The furniture, linen, bathroom, and kitchen were squeaky clean and free of clutter. It looked exactly like the photos and matched the description perfectly, offering all the amenities and services as listed. Sue's communication was top-notch, and we had the pleasure of meeting her multiple times during our stay. She was always so happy to help with anything we needed. The location was a dream - so peaceful with beautiful surroundings, providing a perfect retreat for some relaxation. Overall, it was an amazing experience and great value for money. I can't wait to return! Best regards, Katie

We had a lovely stay at Coachmans Cottage. It is really helpful that the friendly owners live on site so would be able to help with any problems - though we had none! Fresh flowers and a cream tea on arrival were lovely touches. An excellent centre for exploring the area. All as described by the owners.

A lovely home from home with that extra touch of Christmas magic. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This quaint cottage was a perfect getaway for me and my dog Jas at Christmas and the New Year. The cottage is secluded and very self-contained and although I packed many things just in case (including a small Christmas tree) I didn't need any of it as everything I could want was on hand. There were tasteful decorations with lit trees by the fire and in the bedroom. The fire was ready to light and a Christmas cream tea ready and waiting. The owners Sue and Tom live next door and clearly put a lot of effort into making everyone's stay special. Once we were used to the narrow lanes, we revelled in coastal walks to Clovelly, Hartland Point, Croyde Bay and Jas especially liked surfing at Westwood Ho! We aIso managed to climb a few tors on Dartmoor and I reacquainted myself with some welcoming old inns from uni days. And after all that the water is always hot for a soothing bath and the bed exceedingly comfortable. What a great relaxing break!

“Cosy warm and comfortable” Reviewed on Trip Advisor January 14th, 2015 Loved this place and would definitely return. Don't be fooled when you arrive and pull up into the rambling courtyard outside of the cottage..it adds to the character. Although its quite compact it is so cosy, warm and peaceful with a pub up the road (5 min walk) serving lovely food and very friendly although the walk up is a bit "hairy" in the dark as there are a few bends in the road and no pavement or lighting. Such a lovely welcome when we arrived lovely touches like a xmas tree with lights and chocolates, a lovely fire ready to light and a wonderful cream tea laid out for us. The bed was so comfortable the best I have ever slept in while away and i was,nt waking up until 9.30 most days. Lovely area and not so far to travel to the beautiful beaches nearby..ideal for the dog. This is an ideal place if you require peace quiet and relaxation which we definitely got..to go out in the day for nice walks and return late afternoon light the fire and chill. Can,t wait to visit again. Thankyou to the owners.
