LOCATION GUIDE: CROYDE BAY

Nestled on the stunning North Devon coast, Croyde Bay is one of the UK’s most beloved seaside destinations. Known for its golden sands, dramatic coastal scenery and laid-back surf culture, it offers something special for every visitor – whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation or simply a breath of sea air.

Croyde itself is a small, picturesque village surrounded by rolling hills and rugged cliffs. At its heart lies a friendly community with a distinctly Devon charm. The narrow lanes are lined with thatched cottages, welcoming pubs and independent shops, giving the village a timeless, postcard-perfect feel. You’ll find everything you need within walking distance from Croyde Little Gem, from surf hire and cafés to local markets and coastal walking trails.

THE BEACH
Croyde Bay beach is a short walk from the village and one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the South West. With soft golden sand and rolling waves, it’s a paradise for surfers and beach lovers alike. Lifeguards patrol the beach during peak season, making it safe for swimming, bodyboarding and paddleboarding. When the tide is out, the wide sands are perfect for beach games, sandcastles or simply relaxing in the sun. As the tide comes in, the waves attract surfers from all over the world, and even beginners can take a lesson at one of the local surf schools.

COASTAL WALKS AND SCENERY
For those who love to explore on foot, the South West Coast Path passes right through Croyde, offering breathtaking clifftop walks in both directions. Head north towards Baggy Point for panoramic views across the bay and out to Lundy Island. The route is managed by the National Trust and rewards walkers with spectacular sunsets, seabirds and wildflowers in summer. Heading south takes you toward Saunton Sands, another sweeping beach backed by sand dunes and surf breaks.

FOOD AND DRINK
Croyde is home to several fantastic places to eat and drink, many of which are within a few minutes’ walk of Croyde Little Gem. The village pubs – such as The Thatch and Billy Budds – are famous for their warm atmosphere, hearty food and live music. You’ll also find cosy cafés serving cream teas, beachside kiosks selling fresh coffee and ice cream, and restaurants featuring locally sourced seafood. On sunny days, enjoy a pint of local ale in a beer garden or take fish and chips to the beach for a simple seaside supper.

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS
Beyond Croyde, North Devon offers a wealth of attractions for all ages. Saunton Sands, just over the headland, is a vast three-mile beach loved by longboarders and dog walkers. Nearby Woolacombe has been voted one of the best beaches in the UK, and its lively village offers shops, restaurants and surf schools. For families, The Big Sheep and Exmoor Zoo make great day trips, while the historic market town of Barnstaple is perfect for shopping, dining and exploring local heritage.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES
Whether it’s surfing, coasteering, kayaking or horseback riding, adventure is never far away in Croyde. Several local companies offer equipment hire and guided experiences for all skill levels. Baggy Point is a popular spot for rock climbing and wildlife spotting, and the surrounding countryside is ideal for cycling or scenic drives through the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

GETTING AROUND
Croyde is easily accessible by car, with good links to nearby villages such as Georgeham, Braunton and Woolacombe. A regular local bus service runs along the coast, connecting Croyde with Barnstaple and Ilfracombe. Most visitors, however, find that once they’ve arrived, everything they need is within walking distance – from the beach and shops to the coastal paths and pubs.

THE LOCAL VIBE
Croyde has a friendly, relaxed energy that captures the best of coastal living. Surfers mingle with walkers, families, and locals, all drawn by the same love of sea air, good food and unspoiled scenery. There’s a sense of timelessness here – a place where you can switch off, slow down, and enjoy simple pleasures: salty hair, sandy feet, and sunsets that linger over the horizon.

Whether you’re coming for the surf, the scenery or simply the peace and quiet, Croyde Bay has a magic all its own – and from Croyde Little Gem, you’re perfectly placed to enjoy every bit of it.

Very comfortable, good sized cottage close to Croyde pubs, restaurants and beach. Well appointed, nicely furnished and good up-to-date facilities. Plenty of parking space on the driveway, good efficient heating and well insulated against wind and traffic noise. Communication with the management company was efficient and easy. We would definitely return to Little Gem Cottage.

Incredible holiday home, close to Croyde beach and the village. The home has so much outdoor space, loungers, chairs, a front and back lawn. If you are visiting Croyde (and if you aren’t you should be) highly recommend staying here. The host also was kind enough to leave us some check in welcome gifts which made us feel even more at home. Thank you! And we’ll be back soon!

The bungalow was perfect for our unexpected month in Croyde. Given our situation, it was perfect for recovering after surgery and easily manageable with crutches. Even the shower was a godsend. Almost a home away from home and everything was provided. We enjoyed Netflix too - thank you. Marion and Tony were absolutely wonderful too and a great help. Thank you.

We have had a fabulous week. The bungalow is very comfortable and deceptively spacious! We arrived in a storm and left after some glorious weather too! We have enjoyed the position of "Little Gem" - easy access to Croyde village and lovely walks round "Baggy" and towards Putsborough and Woolacombe. We've hardly used the car! My husband's family have been coming here for generations and we have been bringing our own family here for over 20 years! "Little Gem" lives up to its name. Thank you for sharing your home with us.

A lovely week spent at Little Gem and lucky with the weather considering it's mid-October. The Thatch has an amazing menu, food is scrummy! Croyde beach is lovely, I ran to the beach and back most days, good workout! On the last day I found a hidden beach area, to the left hand side of Croyde Beach beside the steps. Take a look, found 2 crabs there! They must all hide in the secret beach! Didn't see the badgers, but could tell each morning they had been in teh back garden. woolacombe is a lovely place to visit, great for kids. Crazy golf and swings. "Little Gem" goes by the name! Lovely cosy house, great TV but Monopoly was played most eves. Sun, wind, rain....this is an amazing place.

We have been coming to Croyde for many years and all thought that this was one of the lovliest places we have stayed. The garden is beautiful and perfect for the kids to play in - they have loved playing in the front garde and watching the horses go past. The house is lovely and homely and we have introduced nanny and grandad to Netflix! Beach and village are lovely as ever - hope to be back next year.

We enjoyed our second visit to Little Gem. We loved playing swingball in the front garden. The beach is fun. We made our first proper visit to Putsborough Beach, which we loved. Will be back again next year. We have been to Croyde 8 times and this is by far the best home yet!

Nanny and grandad have been to Croyde 20 years ago when daddy was young. We were here two years ago when I was a baby and imaging wasn't born you we ever had a wonderful week enjoying the beach, automata Castle(Which I love), ilfracombe and the the ice cream parlour in the village. We also went to the big sheep - fantastic day! We love our home and garden and adults say they haven't arrested anyway better. All the little extras on arrival helped. I E tea coffee milk and juice. The garden is a great place to hide things so I hope you don't find anything strange! We've all liked the giants feet under the sun lounger! Daddy loves Croyde and now mummy loves it too, so we will be back. Must be something to do with the cream teas. Thank you for having us and letting us stay in your lovely home -Alice Hobbs family.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our week's stay at Little Gem. The house has definitely lived up to its name! It is perfectly situated between the beach and the village centre. The house is homely and delightfully furnished. The garden is also beautiful, The lounges are fantastic on a warm sunny day. Croyde is a lovely village with it is shops and restaurants, a highlight for us was The Thatch. Its meals were delicious, particularly the specials. Clovelly is a must see with its winding cobbled streets with beautiful cottages and shops leading to a stunning harbour. This has been an excellent week break, we would love to stay at the faultless Little Gem again!

What a brilliant house. Perfect for families with small children. So comfortable and everything for our younger children is here. Issue with sliding door to the conservatory, we couldn't open it and it had all things in! Despite this we had a wonderful stay, already our next trip back to this home! Thank you.

“It would be hard to find nicer accommodation or a better location for a family holiday.” We would not hesitate to recommend this lovely property, it is spacious, comfortable, had been recently refurbished. it was well provided with games, books, a Wii, Blu ray player. The garden was large.well equipped with furniture, the children loved it. Location is ideal for walking to the beach, village and several very good places to eat. The housekeepers presented an immaculate property and a welcome pack. Easy access to the coastal path for walking. The owners have lavished investment and thought on this property and provided a real home from home. From ease of booking. a wonderful reception and a great holiday we couldn't have asked for more

“A beautiful bungalow which we have been lucky to stay at for our last three holidays to Croyde Bay.” We have stayed at Little Gem for our last three holidays with young grandchildren and their parents. The property is very well equipped, and a real home from home. There are large comfortable beds, two bathrooms and a newly refurbished kitchen. The gardens, front and back, are large and private where the young children can play safely. We spent evenings enjoying the late sun and having a drink on the patio. On our one rainy afternoon we were very comfortable staying home and watching TV or playing one of the many box games provided. The bungalow is well appointed for beach, village and pubs.

“Extremely well equipped, very comfortable bungalow” We stayed at Little Gem for 2 weeks, along with elderly parents (in their 80s) and another couple of friends from the USA for part of the time. Little Gem is an excellent house - very well presented, spotlessly clean and everything worked perfectly. WiFi was excellent throughout the property. TV good too, along with instructions about how to use BBC IPlayer, ITV Player, other Apps, DVD Player, the Wii etc etc. Kitchen is very nice (new in January 2015) and well equipped. Washing machine worked well, although I suppose some use instructions would have been helpful. Both front and back gardens are big and very nice, with lots of chairs, tables etc. The housekeepers, Tony and Marion, are absolutely excellent - we had a couple of queries during our stay and they called back immediately, sorted everything etc. The owners also obviously care about the property, which always helps - they stay there themselves from time to time, and it is clear that they keep making improvements to the property and resolving any issues raised. We would highly recommend this property - it is obviously great for kids, but it was also very successful for two less mobile people in their 80s. We will certainly think about staying here again.

“Very well equipped, beautifully decorated, comfortable, spacious bungalow ideal for family groups” We stayed at Little Gem with our son and his family, with 2 young children aged 4 years and 16 months. There was plenty of room, the facilities were excellent: great bathroom and separate toilet, lovely rooms with one en-suite, and plenty of storage space. The kitchen was brand new and very well equipped, complete with dishwasher tablets, bin liners, washing up products etc. - all stuff we've had to take in the past but didn't need here. Everything was spotlessly clean when we arrived, and there was a small welcome pack. There were board games available for all ages and DVD's, and in the garage there were garden games, including little paddling pool, which we used. In the garden were table and chairs, and loungers. The conservatory was ideal for sitting and reading, and playing with grandchildren especially on cooler days. Everything you need for a stress-free home from home holiday and we didn't want to leave!
