Some places you book for the location. This one you book for the feeling.
Tucked into the last remaining acres of a historic Constantia dairy farm, The French Cottage at Welgelee is a romantic retreat designed entirely around two people and the quiet they came to find. Horses graze peacefully in the paddocks beyond your garden wall, while a riverside greenbelt winds through indigenous fynbos, inviting slow morning strolls and unhurried afternoons. Surrounded by the lush beauty of the Constantia Valley, you'll find yourself just minutes from renowned wine estates including Groot Constantia, with Tokai Forest providing a natural backdrop to this secluded sanctuary.
Step inside and the pace of life immediately softens. High ceilings rise to exposed wooden beams, pale screed floors reflect the changing light, and carefully chosen antiques sit beneath timeless oil paintings. The interiors feel effortlessly elegant—collected over time rather than simply decorated. Upholstered armchairs and a classic settee gather around a generous wood-burning fireplace, creating the perfect setting for cool Cape evenings spent with a good book or a glass of local wine.
The open-plan living space flows naturally into a thoughtfully appointed kitchen where cooking becomes part of the experience. A Smeg gas stove and oven, beautiful crockery and quality cutlery provide everything needed for leisurely meals shared together, whether you're preparing breakfast before a day of exploring or a candlelit dinner at home.
The bedroom is a private haven, separated from the living area by a sweeping curtain that can be drawn for complete intimacy or left open to enjoy the warmth of the firelight. A king-size sleigh bed forms the centrepiece of the space, while double French doors open onto a secluded shade garden where an outdoor shower offers a refreshing connection to nature.
The bathroom is a destination in its own right. A spacious walk-in shower, dual-basin vanity and a beautifully restored Victorian bath create a luxurious retreat. Raised on a platform overlooking the hidden cottage garden, the bath offers a tranquil place to soak while gazing out onto greenery. Many guests agree that the tub alone is reason enough to stay.
Outdoor living is equally inviting. A covered patio just off the kitchen features a long cushioned bench and dining table, perfect for slow breakfasts, afternoon lunches or evening drinks beneath the trees. A short stroll away, yet positioned far enough to preserve the cottage's sense of privacy, is a large 12m x 5m saltwater swimming pool available for guests to enjoy on warm summer days.
Couples seeking privacy, romance and complete relaxation. Whether you're celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary, special occasion or simply escaping the city, The French Cottage offers an intimate and memorable Constantia experience.
Travelling with friends or family? The cottage can be booked alongside the neighbouring Silos at Welgelee, allowing the estate to accommodate groups of up to twelve guests.
