Summer is finally here with full time opening hours at all the local attractions.

by Admin30. June 2016 10:00

Today is the last day of the low season according to Hele Corn Mill! This working water mill dating back to 1525 still mills flour with its water powered stones. After looking around the mill you can then head for the  Tea Room to try out the mill made flour. Many of the cakes use the mill’s own flour and are baked by the Miller’s wife. They also serve a twist on the traditional Devon Cream Tea – cheese scone, cream cheese and onion marmalade, sounds lovely if you don’t have my sweet tooth! I think I’ll stick to the fruit scone, jam and clotted cream variety.

Filleigh is small, but it?s got two fantastic eateries! Including No.1 on Trip Advisor

by Admin29. June 2016 10:00

The Stags Head Inn at Filleigh (near South Molton) achieves Trip Advisor’s top position for a Restaurant in the South Molton area. The menu has a varied selection of offerings, including many pub favourites, all home cooked on the premises. Enjoy the range of beers at the thatched pub, adjacent to the lake, surrounded by rolling fields and lush woodlands, as you dine. In the past if you had visited the nearby Castle Hill Gardens the Stag’s Head would have been your only local choice of place to eat, but now the gardens have their own, brand new, tearooms, serving (surprise surprise!) tea! (And cakes, ice cream and light lunches).

A Midsummer Night?s Dream Theatrical, outdoors at Arlington Court in school holiday

by Admin28. June 2016 10:00

This event is for those visiting Devon on 31st July. I am giving you early notice as it is sure to sell out (along with all the best holiday accommodation – book that now with Choice Cottages!). Arlington Court is a spectacular National Trust property near Barnstaple and this outdoor theatre production, by international award winning theatre company Illyria, will take place on the lawn outside the house. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a  humorous love story, about four couples (three human and one fairy) that will enchant all ages. Add in to the mix a heady brew of confusion, magic and mischief and you have the perfect comedy for a summer evening.

News Flash: Mystery horticultural celebrity author talk and book signing at RHS Rosemoor!

by Admin27. June 2016 10:00

I think it must be top secret as I can’t find out who the celebrity author is! All I know is you need to book your place today, for Thursday 30th June, when you will have a leisurely and  indulgent cream team in the Terrace Marquee at RHS Rosemoor whilst listening to a talk by the mystery guest and afterwards there will be a chance to get a signed copy of his or her book! The proceeds will go towards National Gardening Scheme Apprenticeships at RHS Gardens. Maybe by the time you read this the name will have been released.

Clovelly’s tight-knit community is getting Yarn Bombed with knitted donkeys and cobbles!

by Admin26. June 2016 10:00

I’m sure you’ve heard of photo bombing (where someone intrudes into your photo/selfie), but Clovelly never does the same as other places – they’ve gone for bespoke yarn bombing! (Street art that employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn) The residents and others from all over the world have been busy preparing crochet and knitting samples ready to decorate the village. The white knitting of celebrity design guru, Laurence Llewelyn Bowen, will have pride of place in a very special, secret feature of the Clovelly Yarn Bomb, which will be revealed in July! The village is using knitted donkeys, seaside garlands and crocheted ‘cobble-cosies’, plus muchmore, to enhance their entry for Britain in Bloom and to raise money for the Devon Air Ambulance Trust. Make sure you visit during July to see the effects.

Doors open at Tapeley House to take you on a journey, with live music in the dramatic Hall

by Admin24. June 2016 10:00

How’s this for a mission statement? “I tell stories, old and new, fantasy and reality through sounds and words, to hopefully take people on a little journey around my corner of the universe.” Singer/Songwriter Ben Morgan-Brown and The Daniel Billing Band will be sharing what they do with an audience at Tapeley House, Nr. Bideford on Wednesday 29th June. Ben will be playing original songs in a folk style with percussionist Barry Mason & bassist Roi Geyari. The music is a blend of folk and acoustic rock, ranging from intense instrumental pieces to sing along ditties and fast paced bluegrass infused sounds. The subject matter ranges from myths, magic, history and legends to introspection and social exploration.

Handsome Irish Tenors, World Champion Dancers & a Traditional Irish Band ? feet tapping?

by Admin23. June 2016 10:00

I don’t think it’s possible to not get carried away with the energy and joy of good Irish dancing and this incredible live show celebrates the rich history of Ireland and the art of Irish dance, from the disciplined Celtic Step to the sensual, ancient Sean Nos dance style. Rhythm of the Dance is internationally rated as one of the most popular and successful Irish Step Dance shows on tour, by critics, audiences, and millions of fans around the world. Head for the Queen’s Theatre on Thursday June 30th, but don’t be surprised if your feet dance you along the street as you leave!
