An enchanting evening, taking a journey back in time with West End star Lee Mead

An enchanting evening, taking a journey back in time with West End star Lee Mead

Enjoy beautiful songs like ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ from the 1958 film ’South Pacific’. ‘I’ll See You in my Dreams’ from the 1940s film ‘Kitty Foyle’. Enjoy the foot-tapping title song from the Gene Kelly film ‘Singing in the Rain’ and many other surprises from this golden age of music. Lee Mead will bring this engaging era to life with his show Some Enchanted Evening at the Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple on Sunday October 4th. Sit back, relax and immerse yourself in the music.

As the end of 2015 comes into sight, the organised amongst you are planning 2016 holidays

by Admin29. September 2015 14:11

As a holiday home owner with Choice Cottages I always like getting messages from them. Today’s was to let me know of a new booking - for 2016 and it is our 8th week already booked. Easter school holidays are now fully booked and the summer is promising to be full too. That made me think. Have I planned my holiday accommodation yet? If I want my selection of dates at the very best properties I need to plan well ahead. Please don’t miss out on your perfect Choice Cottage by not booking until after Christmas (that’s when the rush of summer holiday bookings happens). Take a look at the properties now, book time off work and select you friends or family to come with you.

Want to explore a real Castle, with dungeons, a maze, gardens, lots of rides & Gnomeland?

by Admin28. September 2015 10:00

Watermouth Castle near Ilfracombe sounds like just the place for you. I spoke to a visitor earlier in the season and they had read about Watermouth Castle on the blog and decided to visit – the best day out of the week they said. Now it’s your chance. They are open daily (except Mondays) and there is a lot to do for people of all ages. Please remember to release granny from the dungeon and take grandpa’s pointy hat and fishing rod from him before you leave! As well as Gnomeland there is Adventure Land and Merry-go-land too, and plenty of places to eat, shop and relax.

Did you take my advice and book a boat trip on the Irene ? I did and sailed earlier this month!

by Admin27. September 2015 10:00

Did you take my advice and book a boat trip on the Irene – I did and sailed earlier this month!

I’m not going to gloat about how wonderful it was to sail around and visit Lundy Island – after all you did have the chance! (I’m sure it’s not too late to book for Irene’s next sailing although it may need to be next year) Instead I thought I would bring you a video of another boat trip to Lundy and give you a taste of Living and Working on Lundy Island. This film is one of the Boat Stories Series, all filmed in North Devon and featuring local people (and seals and puffins!). I think I’ll book a snorkel safari with the seals of Lundy next – it looks magical!

Have you ever been to a live Bee Gees concert? They did have 45 years of performing.

by Admin26. September 2015 10:00

Have you ever been to a live Bee Gees concert? They did have 45 years of performing.

Sadly, with only one member of the original band left alive, a live concert is no longer possible, but you can see the next best thing - Jive Talking perform The Bee Gees. The performance is described as the show Bee Gee fans everywhere have been waiting for. They promise to make audiences, young and old, feel as if they are actually at a Bee Gees concert. Now’s your chance to introduce the younger generation (or just the uneducated members of your group) to what real music was like in your day! To do that you need to book your tickets for the Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe for Friday 2nd October.

?Loopy, mind-scrambling wordplays that make language seem weird & rich with possibility?

by Admin25. September 2015 10:00

“Loopy, mind-scrambling wordplays that make language seem weird & rich with possibility”

Here’s what The Guardian said of Milton Jones & the Temple of Daft show that will be visiting The Queen’s theatre, Barnstaple on Wednesday 30th September: “…his new show offers more besides, stringing together those one-liners into a dotty narrative in which Jones flies to a desert island seeking the treasure that will help resurrect his archaeology career. The story is led solely by Jones’s gags and has minimal life of its own, but it makes an enjoyable change from the usual battery of non-sequiturs, and – demonstrating that Jones can stitch together an entire playlet from puns alone – feels like an even greater feat of virtuosity than the shock-haired comic’s previous shows…… The story’s a bonus, but it’s these jokes – and the dizzying thought of how much time and spadework Jones must devote to extreme lateral thinking – that yield the real treasure.”

The Best in the West (book Festival that is) starts tomorrow at Appledore. What a treat!

by Admin24. September 2015 10:00

I did warn you a few months ago that the Appledore Book Festival was on and I hope you booked your Choice Cottage at the time – the ones within walking distance of most of the events are probably now all booked up. Still you can always take a last minute booking a bit further away and drive in for all the treats available – it will be worth it. The Book Festival runs from 25th September to 4th October and you can enjoy famous guest speakers, writing workshops, talks, discussions, theatre, music and more. Have a look at the full programme and choose the events you will enjoy most.
