Wine Man?s Bluff - I wonder what that?s all about? And where do Big Sheep become relevant?

Wine Man’s Bluff - I wonder what that’s all about? And where do Big Sheep become relevant?

All will be revealed at The Big Sheep on Friday 11th September when you can enjoy a fun night with friends and sample six delicious wines from different counties and see if you can guess which of the panellists is telling the truth and who is trying to baffle you with bull!   The panellists will be made up from upstanding members of the community but do you know your wine well enough to know who is bluffing and who is telling the truth?  Which of the panellists will you trust - Doctor, Solicitor, Vicar or MP? While you ponder the puzzles you will be raising money for Diabetes UK, the British Heart Foundation and North Devon Hospice.

See Ilfracombe from the sea in a Lifeboat, gig or kayak - Sea Ilfracombe Maritime Festival

See Ilfracombe from the sea in a Lifeboat, gig or kayak - Sea Ilfracombe Maritime Festival

There are so many things happening at the Sea Ilfracombe Maritime Festival on weekend of 4th – 6th September that I don’t know where to start to tell you about them, but the real problem is yours – what will you start with on the day? There’s food outlets, a sound stage, lifeboat trips, sailing, gig and kayaking tasters in the harbour, showings of the ‘boat stories’ films, art exhibitions. Add entertainment, such as Punch and Judy and rock pool rambles and the whole family will be entertained. Did I mention the licenced bar?

Wander the paths in the dramatic gorge at Watersmeet and see the stunning waterfalls

Wander the paths in the dramatic gorge at Watersmeet and see the stunning waterfalls

Watersmeet, on Exmoor, is the meeting place of the East Lyn river and Hoar Oak Water. There is a dramatic river gorge, ancient woodlands, miles of paths (wear sensible shoes, some are slippery, but all are worth exploring). There are small and large waterfalls in the gorge, with safe viewing points and lots of footpaths to make your walk into a circular route. Don’t miss the National Trust tea garden and shop because you are too busy taking in the spectacular views and stunning surroundings! You can walk from Lynmouth, so take time to visit the town while you are there. There are some lovely shops, a museum and lots of history of the tragic floods of last century.

Motorbike lovers ? good excuse for a ride to north Devon! Stay the weekend too?

by Admin28. August 2015 10:00

September is the best time to have a holiday in North Devon. The schools are back, so the summer holiday crowds and prices are a thing of the past. The weather is often warm and the sea at its hottest temperatures of the year (OK hot may be the wrong word, but ‘less cold’ doesn’t sound as good!!!) Accommodation is remarkably affordable – you could book a Choice Cottage with a private indoor swimming pool for less than £2,000 for the week. Split that amongst 12 of you and its definitely affordable. At the other end of the scale, you can book a one-bedroom retreat for just £265. Then jump on your bikes and take the long route to Ilfracombe for the Motorcycle Action Group Bike Show on 12th September. Last year there were 250 bikes there, having travelled from near and far. There will be bands, food outlets and lots of like minded people.

Take a virtual Tour of the Lynton Cliff Railway before visiting in person. A great day out

by Admin27. August 2015 10:00

Start at the top for your virtual tour and see the floral displays around the upper station (there’s a great café here too!), then get in the car and have a look around. The spectacular views on the way down are worth appreciating again and again and then take the virtual tour of the lower station. 2015 is their 125th anniversary and it seems like nothing has really changed since someone (a local man?) had the great idea of harnessing the stream to power a tram track to carry goods up the hill. Lynton’s Cliff Railway is definitely worth a visit to experience it for real.

News Flash ? Exmoor Beast seen in Devon. Amazing ? you?re guaranteed to see him too!

by Admin26. August 2015 10:00

My idea of the Exmoor Beast is a huge black cat, just like the one that curls up on the sofa. It will have paws the size of cereal bowls, a tail three feet long and teeth…. and I’ve seen it for real! Exmoor Zoo has the Exmoor Beast in captivity (well really it’s a puma – aka black leopard, but it looks just like the Exmoor Beast). You can see it being fed and learn all about it, as well as stroking alpacas, handling snakes and watching the Meercats watching you. It’s my favourite zoo. Visit it and see if it’s yours too!

Castle Hill Gardens is a hidden gem and is in the Top 10 Woodland Gardens in the UK

by Admin24. August 2015 13:00

As you arrive atCastle Hill, your eye will be drawn to the huge long ochre coloured house, built in 1730, nestled under the hill on which is perched the Castle. Younger visitors are sure to head to the Tanglewood Tree for an exhilarating climb on one of the oldest trees in the garden. Truly a 'garden for all seasons' there is such a variety of things to see and activities for children to enjoy that you can spend all day here. Why not bring the family for a picnic, let the children run around, explore and learn in the safe environment of the family friendly 50 acre garden near South Molton.  After your walk come and enjoy a cream tea or local ice-cream at the garden kiosk.  Four legged friends on leads are welcome too! Castle Hill Garden is recommended in Jim Gardiner's top ten Woodland Gardens to visit in 2015.
