It?s the Year of the Sheep. It?s also the year of The Big Sheep here in North Devon!

by Admin28. May 2015 10:00

Have you had a great week? If you haven’t been there already, there is one last attraction you really ought to visit. There’s so much to do that the whole family from toddlers (lots of suitable rides and play areas) to teenagers (they can go on the scarier rides) and animal lovers (visit the horse whisperer or feed the lambs) to race goers (don’t miss the sheep racing). There are places to eat and rest the feet, lots to do and even more to see. No wonder it won Devon Attraction of the Year 2013/2014. Try to book on line in advance if you want discounted tickets.

What a Walk! Rugged Coastlines, Soaring Buzzards, Stunning Views and Verdant Combes

by Admin27. May 2015 10:00

Do you fancy a guided walk on Exmoor? If so the Rugged Coastal Walk of 3.5 miles from County Gate on Saturday 30th May is one you won’t want to miss. Led by a member of the Exmoor Society they promise you an amazing experience, with open moorland, combes and a waterfall. There should be plenty of wildlife. Dogs and children (sturdy ones only!) are welcome. Enjoy the walk and then partake at the café at the end, to round off the day.

Time for a delicious dilemma ? clotted cream or juicy jam first on a scrumptious scone?

by Admin26. May 2015 10:00

This is the sort of decision I really love! First of all you need to be in Devon or Cornwall – we would NEVER consider serving a cream tea with whipped cream here! Now take your warm scone (plain or fruit) and cut it in half (horizontal cut, not vertical, just in case you don’t know!). Now you have to decide between that luscious strawberry jam (other jams work, but are not quite the same!) and the luxurious clotted cream (the crustier bit at the top tastes just as good as the runnier middle). Take the jam or cream and spread it generously on the scone, take the other and spread it even more thickly on top of the first. But which one first? (Officially the Devon way is cream first then jam, but it is delicious either way!)

What?s the difference between the Lifeboats and the Coastguard? Time to find out

by Admin25. May 2015 10:00

There is often confusion, as both are involved in sea rescues and ‘call the lifeboat’ is as likely to be said as ‘call the coastguard’ when some one is in trouble at sea. I think this sums it up. The RNLI rescue people on a purely voluntary basis and aren't Government supported. The Coastguard is part of the Government and patrols the sea watching out for illegal and dangerous shipping and boating. They also coordinate sea rescues. You can meet HM Coastguard at the Lynmouth Pavilion on 27th May from 3pm and find out more.

Three Cheers for the brave Lifeboat Men and Women of the North Devon Coast

by Admin24. May 2015 10:00

Every year hundreds of thousands of visitors enjoy the sun, sand and sea of North Devon and just occasionally something goes wrong. Perhaps a boat part breaks, a surfer gets too far out to sea or even a dog falls over a cliff. If that happens to you then you want to know you will have the experts come to rescue you. You can see the local RNLI lifeboats at their bases at Ilfracombe, Appledore and Clovelly. I just hope you don’t need to see them in action! You can go on line to see their latest call outs and also look for open days and other events.

I?ve heard of Alice in Wonderland, but Alice and the Super Power Flowers?

by Admin23. May 2015 10:00

I’ve heard of Alice in Wonderland, but Alice and the Super Power Flowers?

If you visit RHS Rosemoor during half term you will be able to see an Exhibition of Illustrations, by Sir John Tenniel, of Alice in Wonderland and Alice through the Looking Glass (23rd May – 21st June). Then venture outside that major exhibition and into the magic of Rosemoor’s gardens and there you will find the super power flowers. There is a Top Trumps Trail and a chance to make willow blossoms and pom-pom blooms (23rd – 31st May). Just in case Alice isn’t scary enough visit the Carnivorous Plants exhibition on 23rd-25th May. There’s so much to do at Rosemoor this half term!

Angry Men? What Angry Men? Those Angry Men - Twelve of them in Barnstaple

Angry Men? What Angry Men? Those Angry Men - Twelve of them in Barnstaple

I don’t think Barnstaple really does angry men. Wander the streets and they are hard to find, it’s really a very peaceful place. But from Monday 1st June to Friday 6th June there will be Twelve Angry Men performing at the Queen’s Theatre. This ‘brilliant’, gripping’, ‘terrific’ show is coming from a record breaking West End run and is in Barnstaple for one week only. The famous names in the cast seem endless, but expect familiar faces from an incredible range of TV shows. Check them out here.
