Heaps of meat, crackling, piles of vegetables, loads of potatoes, Yorkshire puds and lashings of gravy ? mouth-wateringly good!

by Admin27. February 2015 10:00

A couple of weeks ago a decided to try out the fixed price Sunday carvery at Cook Island, near Woolacombe. A friend told me I wouldn’t be disappointed and she was right! The meat was tender and beautifully cooked. The pork crackling, thoroughly crackled and the vegetables hot and well cooked. The Yorkshire puddings were lovely (and go well with turkey and pork, as well as beef!). All together a good value tasty meal, quick for busy people, or leisurely to share with friends. I shall go back!

Loves Labours Won is the story of a comic romance at a house party in 1918.

Press pause on your North Devon house party to go and see it, The Royal Shakespeare Company is world famous and now you can experience one of their performances of Loves Labours Won live, from the comfort of the Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe on Wednesday 4th March. This is part of the RSC Live series of events, where you watch a screening of the production as it happens elsewhere in the country. The quality of image and sound will be fabulous (please don’t let me down Landmark equipment and technicians!) and so you get to see a world class performance, without leaving the comfort of North Devon or incurring the expense of the tickets, hotel, transport and all the other trimmings. Spend it instead with a pre-performance meal (my recommendation is The Terrace Tapas Bar in Ilfracombe) and then, after enjoying the show, make the most of the rest of your time in the south west.

Mother?s day should be all about celebrating the wonderful woman who has given you so much ? thank her by spending time with her

by Admin25. February 2015 10:00

Do you find life sometimes feels like a fair ground ride, spinning faster and faster and you just manage to keep up with doing the things that must be done today and you keep putting off those things you want to do, leaving them until tomorrow and then tomorrow is just as busy as today so there’s always the next day. For many people spending time with their mother is one of those things they leave until tomorrow. I want you to make time for her for Mother’s Day, and do it properly. Mother’s Day is Sunday March 15th this year and there is still time for you to cancel anything else lined up for the weekend, book a luxury self catering holiday home and spend some quality time with your mum. It will be the best present you could give her. You could even invite your brothers and sisters – just book a bigger house and give them a phone call. It will save them wondering what gift to get. Give her your time!

The Pier at Westward Ho! is only a few stumpy posts, visible at low tide, but once the pier stretched into the sea, but only for 10 years!

by Admin24. February 2015 10:00

I don’t think the Pier at Westward Ho! can be considered one of the Victorian engineers greater successes. It was started in 1870. The cast iron pillars snapped before it was finished in 1871 and a shortened pier was finally finished in 1873, before being destroyed by storms in 1880. Now the Pier House Restaurant is sited at the original end of the pier. It serves a fantastic selection of good quality food, all freshly prepared in the kitchens, The large dining area is situated right at the edge of the sea with picture windows looking out onto the rocks and crashing waves. As you look out on a February day, you’ll understand why the pier didn’t last long! Dogs are welcomed in to the bar area (full menu served there). The food is excellent and the views stupendous. Definitely highly recommended by me.

Do you know any songs about the seaside….just remember that when you’re actually by the sea you’ll just want to sing. Any song will do!

by Admin23. February 2015 11:35

OK You guessed it. Half term is over. It’s the last week in February and there is not a lot going on in North Devon. This is the time to book your holiday cottage if you want to get away from everyone! But that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun! Listen to the Timmy Time Seaside Song (CBeebies). The cartoon pictures are perfect for kids. How about I do like to be beside the seaside – more suitable for grannies? Ok now your turn - click on the Ilfracombe Harbour live webcam and start singing. Just think how much bigger your smile will be when you’re actually here and the sun is shining warmly, the waves lapping gently, the sea salt hanging in the air and the family is playing joyfully on the endless sandy beaches.

Was it nice half-term holiday, stuck at home with bored kids, the usual work and domestic chores? You should have been on holiday in Devon!

by Admin23. February 2015 11:32

It’s up to you to make the next one different. For the half term holiday at the end of May, you could be in a luxury holiday home in North Devon, by the sea, on the moors, in one of the beautiful market towns or rural villages. You might be taking a dip in the heated pool, planning a relax, as the sun goes down, in the hot tub, or a bit of star gazing in the garden after a wonderful day on the beach. Don’t leave it too late to book though, May half term is one of the busiest weeks, for holiday homes, in Devon and they are booking up quickly.

Count Arthur Strong gets back to doing what he does best – bringing his show Somebody up there likes me to Barnstaple

by Admin21. February 2015 10:10

Count Arthur Strong has been on BBC Radio 2 for donkey’s years (I wonder how long that really is?) but now he’s been let loose, live, on the unsuspecting public of Barnstaple. It happens on Thursday 26th February at The Queen's Theatre. Here’s Arthur’s message to you: “If you only buy one ticket for something this year buy a ticket for this one twice and bring a friend. I promise you, you won’t regret it. And if you do there must be something wrong with you. No refunds”.
