Carmen and Scherazade come together in an exciting musical experience (and not just for the audience!) on Saturday 7th February

by Admin31. January 2015 10:07

How do I know that the experience will be exciting for everyone involved – I have inside information as one of the musicians of the North Devon Sinfonia that will be undertaking this journey with you. Scherazade is recognised as one of the most exciting and (for some instruments) challenging pieces in the popular classical music repertoire. I also know it’s going to be good! This is a concert that, regardless of your taste in music, you don’t want to miss. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scherazade, with her 1001 Arabian Nights stories, is exhilarating to listen to with its solo violin (Dan Kent). The programme also includes a selection of pieces from Bizet’s Carmen Suite and Exsultate Jubilate by Mozart (Catherine Hamilton – Soprano). These are all good pieces if you are not a regular at classical concerts (and even better if you are a classical connoisseur!). I am confident this is a programme you will really enjoy. See you there. (I’ll be the one in black on stage!)

Many, many welcomes, February fair-maid! Ever as of old time, Solitary firstling, Coming in the cold time.. (Alfred Lord Tennyson 1809-1892)

Many, many welcomes, February fair-maid! Ever as of old time, Solitary firstling, Coming in the cold time.. (Alfred Lord Tennyson 1809-1892)

The poem continues…

Prophet of the gay time,

Prophet of the May time,

Prophet of the roses,

Many, many welcomes,

February fair-maid!

There is something special about the earliest signs of the coming spring being signalled by the arrival of snowdrops. You can join Jo Hynes (specialist snowdrop grower and collector) at RHS Rosemoor on Thursday 5th February for a talk on Snowdrops in the Winter Garden and demonstration of the range of species and cultivars. Enjoy a lunch in the excellent restaurant and then a guided garden walk will reveal Rosemoor’s own collection of snowdrops. You can then make sure you have some of these little treasures appearing in your garden every January and February when you go home. You may even be able to purchase some on the day in the garden centre or gift shop.

A show called Ultimate Bubble sounded like fun for kids - then I realised it was Ultimate Bublè. That?s more my style!

by Admin29. January 2015 10:42

The Queen’s Theatre Website recommends that for this show (Friday February 6th) you should close your eyes, let the music begin, picture the suit, the looks and prepare for the voice. The tribute performance of Michael Bublè by Mark Daniels is described as amazing. Ultimate Bublè (taster video on the website!) brings you the biggest hits and features a live band so that you can have the full experience.

Here?s a treat for lovers of classical music ? The Endellion String Quartet is bringing Sibelius, Haydn and Beethoven to Barnstaple

by Admin28. January 2015 10:38

The Endellion String Quartet is surely one of the finest string quartets in the world, and with 34 years of playing together completed, they must be one of the most enduring ones too. They have played all over the world, both live and on national TV and Radio programmes. Their concert on Thursday 5th February at The Queen’s Theatre will see performances of:

HAYDN: Quartet Op.20 No.5 Sun

SIBELIUS: Quartet Intimate Voices (Voces Intimae)

BEETHOVEN: Quartet Op.59 No.3 Razumovsky

For those that would like to visit the Village of Endellion (and its famous Easter and Summer Music Festivals) – it’s just along the coast in North Cornwall, near Port Isaac.

Hope Bourne lived a life of self sufficiency in a remote, isolated caravan on Exmoor ? her life is celebrated in a documentary film

by Admin25. January 2015 11:26

2014 saw a new film released featuring the life of Hope Bourne, who died in 2010, aged 91. Hope lived for over 20 years at the ruins of an isolated farmhouse on Exmoor, in a small caravan and claimed to be able to live on less than £1 a week. She painted, sketched and wrote a series of books, as well as growing vegetables and hunting for food. This video How Many People See The stars As I do?  tells the story of an extraordinary woman, both bold and courageous, who has become an Exmoor legend.
