Spring Has Sprung When The Snowdrops Appear In North Devon. See Them For Yourself In Snowdrop Valley

by Admin29. January 2014 09:00

Snowdrop Valley Exmoor

Snowdrop Valley is a privately owned, remote valley in a hidden part of Exmoor, close to Wheddon Cross. The Badgworthy Land Company kindly allow access to the valley while the beautiful carpet of snowdrops is in bloom throughout February each year. Cutcombe Parish Council, in conjunction with Exmoor National Park Authority, runs a Park and Ride Service to Snowdrop Valley and staffs the Snowdrop Information Point in the Car Park. Visitors can also walk down into the valley, and there is a variety of merchandise available to purchase as souvenirs. Don’t miss this once in a year opportunity. The pictures in the paper (usually printed just as the show is nearly over) are breath-taking and visitors always say it is a sight they will never forget. I am definitely going to make it this year!

JAMIE SMITH?S MABON (JSM) AND MAZ O CONNOR - ?A Show Of Originality, Energy And Integrity...?

by Admin26. January 2014 10:33

Jamie Smith’s MABON (JSM) and Maz O Connor are two of the most highly accomplished and critically acclaimed artists in Britain today. This double headline show captures both the depth and breadth of the two intertwined musical cultures – Celtic and English. Both have won plaudits for their live shows, JSM having built their reputation on the outstanding original compositions of Jamie Smith and the virtuoso band that plays with him. Their live show is renowned for its energy and dynamism; their Inter-Celtic music travelling beyond borders to explore the forms and styles of the Celtic traditions and work them anew. Maz (here performing as a trio) has progressed rapidly up the ranks of young  ‘must see’ performers, having been nominated for a 2013 BBC Radio 2 Award, awarded a BBC/EFDSS performing arts fellowship and spent the summer performing music written by Laura Marling with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford. The range of original and traditional material, conveyed with a contemporary style, illuminates the stage and provides a performance of great depth and beauty.

Of Jamie Smith’s MABON -  'a truly compulsive ride' The Independent,

'Both fur coat and knickers. Uplifting, energetic and cerebral in equal  measure' FRoots

'If music could fuel engines, Mabon could solve the energy crisis' Songlines

Of Maz – ‘a vocal performance that stops you dead in your tracks’ (Neil King for Fatea Magazine)

A Devon based singer/songwriter, Chloe Bix, provides the support.

You can see this show on Saturday 1st February at The Studio, Queen Theatre, Barnstaple

SOS ? Scoff Our Scones ? SOS ? Soap Our Saloons ? SOS ? Shed One Stone Or Perhaps - Support Our Savers ? The RNLI Fundraising Day

by Admin25. January 2014 09:00

Friday 31st January 2104 is the Annual RNLI SOS day and lots of local people will be offering activities to help raise funds for our two local RNLI stations – at Appledore and Ilfracombe.

Appledore lifeboat station is home to two lifeboats – an Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat (ILB) and the very latest Tamar class all weather lifeboat (ALB). They also have a third boat – a ‘boarding boat’ – to access the moored Tamar. She too has been involved in her fair share of rescues.

Ilfracombe Lifeboat Station, covering part of the North Devon coast, Ilfracombe has celebrated nearly 180 years as a lifeboat station. The two lifeboats carry out a wide variety of shouts and four medals for gallantry have been awarded.

The North Devon coast is an area that has been notorious for danger to shipping and consequent loss of life since the earliest days of maritime trade and travel. At the foot of cliffs, rising sheer from the sea, treacherous ridges of rock run out under the surface of the water. The safety of anchorages where ships can seek shelter depends on prevailing winds and tides, and under certain conditions there is no safe haven. Please support our lifeboats and hopefully they will never be needed for a rescue with you or your family, but its good to know they’re there in case....
