Scary Volunteers Wanted For ‘Halloween Scary By Night’ Evening Party At The BIG Sheep, Bideford

The Big Sheep Halloween

Do you have the Scare Factor Skills needed to take part in the BIG Sheep’s Halloween Spooktacular Festival? Halloween, the season for gruesome ghouls, loathsome lanterns, wicked witches and scary spells is just around the corner and the BIG Sheep family attraction in Bideford is looking for voluntary actors and actresses to take part in the South West’s scariest Halloween evening parties which are held at the BIG Sheep on Thursday 31st October, Friday 1st November and Saturday 2nd November from 5pm to 10.30pm. Nicola Hall, Halloween event organiser says “We want to make this years’ Halloween festival the best so far. Every year we’re constantly looking at ways to thrill our visitors taking them by surprise and blowing them away with new spooky attractions. Many of our previous Halloween visitors will remember Wes the Werewolf, who comes alive with a chain saw on the Haunted Hayride. He’s been the highlight of Halloween for the last 4 years and this year we want to come up with fresh new ideas and hope that some innovative and creative actors will bring fresh dimensions to this year’s evening parties.

This is a great opportunity for young (and old) budding actors and actresses to try their skills on a live audience.  Taking part is on a voluntary basis but we will provide you with supper and any out of pocket expenses (which will be agreed before taking part). Costumes will be supplied or expenses towards your own costumes will be supplied where deemed necessary”. So if you think you can brave the elements (wet weather included) in the BIG Sheep’s ‘Forbidden Forest’ acting as maggots, zombies or any other ideas you might have then please ring Nic or Claire on 01237 472366 or send a facebook message to the BIG Sheep Family Attraction, or email

Furnishing your Holiday Home for Holiday Lettings ? An Owners Perspective

Furnishing your Holiday Home for Holiday Lettings – An Owners Perspective

Luxury Holiday Cottages Devon

As you have been living in your home until this point, it is probably fully furnished, maybe without much space for extra furniture, but it is important to maximise your income from the house – if you are going to move out and you can make an extra money each week by having an extra bedroom instead of a study, it should certainly be worth considering. Choice Cottages are really good at helping you maximise the income, but do ask them, as they know that everyone likes their home as it is and for them to suggest you change it may be seen as intrusive.

Lets start with visitors eating in your property. Where will they sit –  in the kitchen or the dining room? How many beds do you have? Then you should have that many seats at a table for your guests. My extending Oval table only had six chairs, I bought another six and so we can seat 12 at the dining table (This is checked when you get a star rating visit from Visit England). Here I made a mistake. I had good quality chairs, but as money as really short when preparing for the first season I bought six similar, but cheaper chairs. Simon has now had to spend at least 4 hours, per chair, strengthening them as they get moved around a lot and were not up to the heavier use. The original ones, costing twice as much, have not required any work. If I was starting again I would make sure I buy sturdy, good quality chairs.

Now lets go and sit in the lounge. How many will it sit? (Don’t forget often groups are mixed age and some people may be happy to sit on poufs or cushions) Ideally you should have enough seats for the number likely to rent your house. We don’t, but we do have two lounges and a sofa in the dining room, so we do have comfortable seating for everyone, although not all in the same room. We now realise this works well, as different age groups often go to different rooms to get away from each other! (Teenagers usually head for the DVD room)

Having recently rented a holiday home with my 81 year old mother, and she spent the two days sitting on a kitchen chair, I realised the importance of having at least one chair that is easy for older, or less mobile, members of the party to use easily.

Beds, as I am sure you know, come in all shapes and sizes. So do mattresses. I am beginning to pity my children as I now realise what old, cheap mattresses I had been making them sleep on! If you have room then think about having king size beds rather than doubles, or even better have two singles that can be pulled together to make a king size. This gives flexibility for people booking your house and may result in an extra boking or two.

Mattresses should be good quality and must be clean. Buy waterproof breathable covers for them (the ones that don’t make crinkly sounds when you sleep on them!). These can be replaced if they get stained and you can keep a spare in case you need to change it during a change over day. Don’t forget there are always visitors who strip the beds, so make sure you are as proud of your mattress cover cleanliness as you are of the bedding! I have a different type of mattress on each of my double beds and know some of my visitors choose the room according to the mattress type.

Bedroom furniture may be a problem. If you have added beds to rooms there may not be room for bedroom furniture. Every room should have some hanging space and some drawers. A mirror in each room is also good (I haven’t got hanging space or a mirror in every twin room). I solved the problem of the storage, and saved money, by buying captain’s beds, with drawers underneath. The salesman was rather shocked when I ordered six at once!

If you are furnishing rooms that you don’t use much normally, then think about simplicity – it makes it easier to clean and that becomes very important if you rent the house out for several weeks in a row. It will still be fine for when you are using it as your guest bedroom.

Next instalment I will share my experience of preparing for the first rental. If you are now thinking it may be possible to rent your house out please contact Choice Cottages and check out how much you will need to do and how much income you could potentially generate. The difference may not be great the first year (we just about broke even, as we had so much to do) but the 2nd year made much more profit.

Once upon a time, in magnificent Holiday Cottages in North Devon, A Beautiful Princess...

Once upon a time, in magnificent Holiday Cottages in North Devon, A Beautiful Princess...

Sleeping Beauty

OK back to reality – it may not be set in locally, but here in North Devon you can experience the thrills, excitement, beauty and drama of Sleeping Beauty. Just visit The Queens Theatre in Barnstaple on Friday 18th or Saturday 19th October 2013. Once upon a time ... (as all good fairy tales begin), in a faraway land beyond imagination, Tchaikovsky's sumptuous music fills the air and wondrous characters come to life before your very eyes. Fairy tale characters abound alongside a King, a Queen, Good and Evil Fairies, Fairies of Gold, Silver, Diamonds and Sapphire plus the inevitable handsome Prince, all weaving their magic to present this timeless tale of Princess Aurora, The Sleeping Beauty - a story lovingly repeated throughout generations but never before performed so magnificently as with this colourful spectacle of Russia's finest..... Moscow Ballet - La Classique.

As the traditional Russian story goes, it is a prick from a knitting needle hidden in flowers by the wicked fairy Carabose that sends Princess Aurora into her 100 year sleep. Rescued by the kiss of her Prince, the beautiful Aurora and her legend live on once more. You are cordially invited, one and all, to relive the fairy tale dream in this universally acclaimed production.

The greatest success of Russian theatre is undoubtedly Classical Ballet, an area in which Russian dancers (aided by some of the world's greatest choreographers) have reigned supreme since the 1820's. Moscow Ballet - la Classique, founded in 1990, utilising ballet dancers from the leading theatres of the CIS Countries and the Bolshoi, Kirov and Ballet Theatres of Kiev and Odessa, carries on this tradition.

Always in demand, Moscow Ballet - La Classique has recently thrilled ballet lovers during hugely successful tours of Egypt, Morocco, France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Norway, Israel, Thailand, Taiwan, China, Japan, Australia and New Zealand as well as the UK, and this talented company have deservedly gained vast international acclaim.

World-renowned soloists Nadezda Ivanova, Ekaterina Shalypina, Andrey Lyapin, and Andrey Shalin lead the Moscow Ballet Company under the direction of Elik Melikov.
