Heartbreak Theatre presents "Romeo and Juliet" at Hartland Abbey & Gardens on Sunday 18th August 2013

Grab your camera, sunglasses and guidebook and join Heartbreak Productions on an epic trip of a lifetime .... First stop, a hot, steamy piazza in Verona and a monumental love story. Two innocent young lovers fall victim to family hatred and cruel destiny – as the heat rises and fervour mounts, power, passion and politics all play their part in this extraordinary tale as it cascades towards its agonizing and iconic end. Thrills and dynamism, masks, dance, blades, potions and poetry – Heartbreak’s inimitable storytelling style infuses a modern twist but maintains all the intensity of this legendary tale, creating a unique and compelling performance to move and engage audiences as they watch this riveting romance played out under sultry Italian skies. Bring rugs, low backed chairs and picnics or enjoy a delicious barbecue by Exmoor Kitchen, the Pimms and Wine Bar and Dunstaple Farm Ice Creams. Gardens and grounds are open free to those attending from 2 hours before the performance.

Enjoy Clovelly Gig Regatta and Spend a Family Day Out Visiting all the Attractions at Clovelly

Enjoy Clovelly Gig Regatta and Spend a Family Day Out Visiting all the Attractions at Clovelly

Date:                  Saturday, 17 August 2013

Location:            Clovelly Harbour

The West Country boasts a long tradition of racing pilot gigs.  Gig racing is exciting, strenuous and often downright dangerous, with crews reaching speeds of 9 knots in North Devon's powerful tidal waters. You're assured an exhilarating day's racing, so come along and cheer on the brave crews! In case you are unfamiliar with gig racing here is some history: In the late 17th century gigs were working boats in the South West and the Scillies, ferrying pilots out to incoming vessels to help them navigate through the rocks and safely into harbour.  The boats competed to get their pilot out to the boat ...and the fee...first. Gigs also served other purposes along the English coast - salvage, smuggling and lifesaving - sometimes under sail but more often rowed by a crew of six. Gigs needed to have length, lightness and flexibility to be manageable in extremely heavy seas.  Gig racing was born out of the competition to get the pilots out to boats and from the testing of newly built gigs against others to measure their performance. More info at: www.clovelly.co.uk

There is also the chance to pan for gold, jumping pillows (way more exciting than trampolines!) crazy golf and then get lost in the Smuggler’s Trail Prize Maze. This is Devon’s largest hedge maze - get lost for hours in the interactive maze for the whole family. (No shoppers - I said hours, not days!) You can either try and navigate your way about the hedged maze or if you are feeling really adventurous you can take part in the quiz to win yourself a prize to take home as your reward. Simply look out for the fishes that are hidden around the maze and note down their letters and numbers on your quiz sheet to claim your prize.
