Calling All Golfers – Would You Like a Golfing Holiday cottage in North Devon?

Golfing Holidays Devon

A quick internet search of golfing in North Devon reveals 52 courses across Devon ( and some of the best courses are in North Devon. For example Saunton Sands Golf Club “The famous links courses at Saunton justify the claim to be among the finest in Britain. The Championship East Course on 6779 yards, par 71 now sits alongside the newer West Course 6403 yards par 71. Golf World rank The East Course as the 60th best course in the world.” ( Or perhaps you’d like to try out the smaller, but unique course at Woolacombe, with its breath-taking sea views. ( Of course there is always the less serious side of golfing, with plenty of fun crazy golf courses to keep the less serious golfers amused. The most important thing (after the golf, of course) must be the holiday home you choose. Choice Cottages are available in small peaceful villages, bustling seaside towns, traditional market towns and isolated rural retreats. Gather a group of your golfing friends and book a luxury self catering holiday cottage with a pool or hot tub. How about coming in September when the weather is usually wonderful and holiday cottages UK are really good value? Split the cost of the property between you all, book a few days off work, enjoy the golf and, need I say it, some wonderful après golf!

All Things Morris... a Free Festival in Ilfracombe: Morris Minor, William Morris, Morris Dancing.... | Stay in Ilfracombe Cottages

All Things Morris... a Free Festival in Ilfracombe: Morris Minor, William Morris, Morris Dancing....

Morris Dancing Ilfracombe

An exciting new event is being held on Saturday 13th July 2013 in Ilfracombe celebrating all things Morris. Morris dancing is a British folk dance that is often accompanied with live music. It is a lively and high-impact form of choreographed dance, which is performed through the rhythmic stepping and implementation of a series of figures by a team of dancers. There are several sides (teams) already set to perform on The Seafront, The Old Quay Head (Ilfracombe Harbour) and Fore Street. The sides will perform in rotation in all three areas and the areas are an easy, few minutes, level walk apart. Should the weather not be kind then the sides will perform in the Landmark Theatre Pavilion on The Seafront. Some of the Morris sides will also hold 'have a go' workshops where interested members of the public can try their hands. Morris Motors Limited is a British motor vehicle manufacturer. Though merged into larger organisations, the Morris name remained in use until 1984. Morris Motors began in 1912 when bicycle manufacturer William Morris moved on from the sale, hire, and repair of cars to car manufacturing. A factory was opened in 1913 where Morris's first car, the 2-seat Morris Oxford "Bullnose" was assembled & therefore this is the 100th anniversary of the Bullnose. Today there are enthusiasts all over the world.

Ilfracombe will host it's own Morris car show on the afternoon of Saturday 13 July. There will be trophies for winning entrants including 'The People's Choice' so everyone attending can have their own vote. Any Morris car owner wishing to participate should contact The Tourist Information Centre for more information. William Morris (24 March 1834 to 3 October 1896) was an English Textile designer, artist and writer associated most strongly with the Arts and Crafts movement. Ilfracombe Museum will host an exhibition of his work. There will be other 'goings on' around the town including games, stalls and free music. More info at:

Income Generation from your North Devon Holiday Cottages as Luxury Self Catering Holiday Cottage ? An Owner?s Perspective

by Admin24. June 2013 13:26

Income Generation from your North Devon Home as a Luxury Self Catering Holiday Cottage – An Owner’s Perspective

High View Farmhouse in near Woolacombe

It all started with a chance conversation with a colleague – “you could make loads of money” he said “if you let out your house during the school holidays”. It was February 2011 and, with two children heading for university that September, money was needed. For the past nine years we had been renovating a nearly derelict farmhouse between Ilfracombe and Woolacombe and although it was very comfortable to live in, there were many things that would not be good enough for visitors.

Step One: Discuss it with the husband (taken aback, but willing to consider it) and two nearly adult children (another one of mum’s 'crazy schemes'). What would we feel having people in our house, using our beds and furniture, whilst we lived elsewhere? Where else could we live during the rental weeks? (My colleague moves his family into a tent – that is not for me.) What if our personal possessions got broken or taken?

Step Two: Find a holiday lettings company that you feel you can work with and look at the finances and practicalities with them. On recommendation we went to Choice Cottages, a decision we have been very pleased with. Within a day they had come and looked at our home, given us an idea of what the summer holiday rental income could be and also some realistic idea of how much work would need to be done before the July rentals started.

Step Three: Make a decision. We needed to make the decision quickly as Choice Cottages would need to market us in order to ensure we had bookings for every week we wanted to make available and also so that my husband could start on all the work that would need to be completed. Encouraged by the thought that they could each have a quarter of the rental money for their university living expenses the kids encouraged us to go for it and the decision was YES.

Step Four: Choose a rental name for the property. We chose High View Farmhouse. Click here to have a peek at the final result!

Choice Cottages quickly completed a survey of the whole house and compiled a list (four typed, A4 pages of single line bullet points, such as ‘Plumb in family bathroom’! Ours was a partially renovated building hence the long list – I’m sure most homes won't need as much done) for us to work through. My husband stated work, Choice Cottages started marketing and I started sourcing all the extra things we would need for the rentals to be successful. Choice Cottages also provided us with lots of very helpful information (also available on the owners section of their website) to help us get started.

Please read further instalments to find out how preparations went, what we learnt as we prepared for the first summer of rentals and what we have learnt since. Feel free to email questions into Choice Cottages if you want more information on renting out your home or have a specific question for the author on her experiences.

Learn How To Paddle on Holiday in Devon

Learn How To Paddle on Holiday in Devon

I can hear your indignant shout from here – “I have known how to paddle since I learnt to walk”. I am sure you are right and I agree the paddling on the beaches of North Devon is spectacular for children of all ages! But this activity day is all about Canoe Paddling. How are you at that? Picture yourself softly moving down the river, gentle lapping of water, the splash of paddles, glimpsing the wildlife (maybe even an otter), perhaps ending up at a lovely village pub or retiring to your holiday home for a soak in the hot tub with a glass of your favourite wine with a BBQ. On Saturday 29th June 2013 a Family Paddle Day is being held on Dartmoor. It is suitable for families with children over 8. It’s not a skills based trip or certificated, but you will learn to paddle and are guided around the local rivers and canals around Dartmoor. This is a great day out where you'll learn the basic skills of canoeing whilst seeing the wildlife along the river. Adult Paddle Days are also run and are suitable for adult groups. Have a look at the website for details. All the courses are run by experienced instructors who hold awards from the National Governing Body. All equipment is provided.More info at:

Mike Oldfield?s Tubular Bells ?FOR TWO? at North Devon?s Premier Theatre

Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells ‘FOR TWO’ at North Devon’s Premier Theatre

Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells for Two 40th Anniversary Concert Tour comes to North Devon on Friday 28th June 2013 at 19.45

When Mike Oldfield released his 1973 masterpiece, Tubular Bells, it required more than 30 musicians to perform it. Now, 40 years on, performed by just two massively talented musicians, this thrilling show recreates the album on stage, in real time, in a unique and compelling theatrical experience. The original 1973 album shot to number one around the world, throwing its young composer into the international spotlight and kick-started Richard Branson’s Virgin empire. Now two Australian multi-instrumentalists race from instrument to instrument  juggling pianos, organs, guitars, mandolin, drums, glockenspiel, loop pedals, synthesizers and, of course, tubular bells. Tubular Bells for Two burst onto the international scene at the Sydney Festival and was the smash-hit show of the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe - winning a Herald Angel Award and garnering several five star reviews. Witness this herculean feat as Daniel Holdsworth and Aidan Roberts recreate the beauty and playful lunacy of one of the most important albums of the 20th Century with just four hands and four feet. Have a look at the trailer on their website to see what an incredible experience you are in for. How do two men manage to play all those instruments?

“Two man orchestra bring soundtrack of 70s back to life... an intensely focused race around every twist and turn of Oldfield's quirky masterwork” The Times

“A live music experience, a virtuoso performance from two musicians at the top of their game.”  Edinburgh Evening News

“The musical equivalent of the triathlon – with bells on.”  The Scotsman

“A musical tour de force. Mesmerising to watch”  Sydney Morning Herald

“A two-man performance that is part musical, part acrobatic.”  The Australian
