Running in Devon | Bideford Half Marathon | Ninette Quine & Claire Bisset

by Admin19. December 2012 11:19

Choice Cottages | Bideford Half Marathon Challenge

Not satisfied with running the odd marathon, Ninette (Choice Cottages Self Catering Accommodation Managing Director) who ran two London Marathons previously in 1999 and 2009 has decided to do the Bideford Half Marathon with her daughter Claire (Choice Cottages - Financial Director) in March 2013. With only 74 days to go, training started with new level of commitment today. They will be supporting a local charity and we wish them luck with this project. No doubt they will be as successful with their run as they are in their Self Catering Holiday Cottage Accommodation business!

The Bideford Half Marathon is held in March each year over a virtually level course taking in magnificent countryside alongside the River Torridge between Bideford & Great Torrington. The course is half on country roads and half on the Tarka Trail which was formerly a railway line (you even get to run through a tunnel).

Things to do:

Cycling on the Tarka Trail

(Braunton to Fremington – approx. 10 miles)

An old railway line from Meeth, via Barnstaple, to Braunton has been converted into a traffic-free walking and cycling track. Much of the track is flat as it follows the edges of the Taw Estuary.

At the Braunton end, start from the main village centre car park (pay and display) and follow the well sign posted route from the back of the car park (next to the police station). After cycling through the outskirts of the village you will come out by the edge of the estuary, with its ever-changing tides, sandbanks, water channels and wildlife.

At Barnstaple cross the new bridge (cycleway beside the road) or go under the new bridge and cross the old town centre bridge in the centre of Barnstaple (less uphill, but further!).

The cycle track then continues, well signposted, alongside the estuary and through marshes until it reaches the old Quay at Fremington. There are some interesting shelters and artwork along this stretch of the route. Free parking is available at Fremington Quay

See www.sustrans.org.uk for more details

There are many places to stop for refreshment along the route and cycle hire is available at:

Otter Cycle Hire (Braunton) 01271 813339

The walk is along the level, firm surface of the Tarka Trail. There are plenty of marshals and also refreshments and comfort stops provided along the route.

A friendly inclusive atmosphere prevails throughout and it is a lovely opportunity to experience the Tarka Trail during the hours of darkness.
